Again, ambulances could not provide timely service

LUDHIANA: Once again, 108 emergency ambulance service failed to provide timely medical aid to the accident victims. On Thursday morning, a Punjab Roadways bus hit a pickup van on Ludhiana-Malerkotla Road, killing a woman and injuring 11 others.
There were only four ambulances that reached the spot, one after the other. An eyewitness, Sarabjit Singh, of Alamgir said, "All women were injured, some were unconscious and some semi-conscious. It was a horrifying accident and they needed immediate medical aid. First, only one ambulance came and took only two patients. Then another came after half-an-hour, followed by two more. Some injured were taken to the hospital in the car of a commuter."

Manager of the ambulance service Jagdeep Singh said, "Ludhiana has 11 ambulances and on an average four are out of city with referred cases. As a result, the city faces a shortage. One ambulance each was sent from Dehlon, Alamgir, Pakhowal Road and the city. Ambulances take time to reach the spot. We had asked them how many ambulances were needed. Our last ambulance took one patient as many were ferried in a private car."

Earlier too, the ambulance service had failed to respond in time.
On March 1, in an accident at Dholewal Chowk in which seven persons suffered severe injuries, commuters and a traffic cop took victims to the hospital as ambulance failed to arrive.

On January 6 when the car of five teenager friends met with an accident on South City Road, the ambulance did not reach on time. That day, around 10 calls were made, but ambulance reached after almost one-and-a-half hour.
Operational head of 108 ambulance service, Punjab, Chetan Sharma said, "The shortage is due to use of ambulances in referred cases."
"At times, mostly in evening and morning hours when doctors are in a hurry to go back home, even non-serious cases are referred to other hospitals. This leads to shortage of ambulances," said a staff member of the service.
